Perspolis | a Walk Through the Ancient Persian Empire

The Persepolis complex ,which is located near Shiraz in Fars Province had long been the ceremonial capital of ancient Persia. The Persepolis (Parsa or Parseh), a prosperous city during Achaemenid dynasty , was built by Cyrus the Great , Darius I and Xerxes I .

The palaces used to host representatives from different countries who would bring gifts to show their respect and gratitude to the great Persian Emperors in an era when Iran was considered a superpower throughout the world.

The incredible architecture which is the typical of that era – high and impressive columns with huge symbolic carved heads on top – attracts millions of tourist every year. The main palaces are Apadana, Gate of all nations and Tachara palace .

Unfortunately, in 330 BC ,Alexander the Great invaded Iran and after having looted the valuables, burned down the city. What we see today is just the ruins of a glamorous Persian city.

Tourists may spend their time being astounded by picturing Persian Princes and Princesses strutting about the luxurious palaces , walking up and down the steps.

This historical site is considered the second one mentioned on UNESCO World Heritage List.
