Mohtasham Garden | Rasht Oldest Park
Rasht is the capital of Gilan province and one of the most beautiful cities in Iran. This city is the largest and most populous city on the southern shores of the Caspian Sea, which is about 25 km from the sea itself. If you are planning to travel to beautiful Rasht, one of the places you should visit is the Mohtasham Garden or the City Park.
The story behind Mohtasham Garden and its Mansion
During the Qajar Dynasty and the reign of Nasser al-Din Shah Qajar, Akbar Khan Biglarbeigi (died in 1901) who was a wealthy man and the head of one of Iran’s richest families in Rasht, ordered the construction of a big garden with beautiful trees and paved paths that we know today as the City Park in Rasht. After his death, the garden and its summer mansion were inherited to his only daughter who was married to her cousin Akbar Mohtasham al-Mulk. Therefore, the garden is known by the name of Mohtasham since then.
Kolah Farangi Mansion, Remains of Qajar buildings in Rasht
Located at the Southern part of Mohtasham Garden, Kolah Farangi Mansion is one of Rasht’s most visited buildings. This Qajar relic is an octagonal building with four stories which looks like a three-story building from outside. Kolah Faranagi Mansion has a 360- degree balcony and you can see a great view everywhere you turn. The exterior of this building, despite its simplicity, is doubly glorious and beautiful. The wooden lion heads, which are a symbol of Persian kings, along with the carved columns and the beautiful balcony railings of this mansion, show the combination of traditional Qajar architecture and traditional buildings of Gilan beautifully.
Mohtasham Garden through time
In the distant past, this park was so large that if you set foot in it without a guide, you would get lost in it. Gradually, with the expansion of the city of Rasht, the need for new street construction was felt more than ever, so the size of this park was reduced. After the Islamic Revolution of Iran, a game city and the Gilan governor’s office were built in this park, which has led to a smaller interior space of the park. A large library for the people of Rasht is to be built in the same governorate.
When to visit?
Since Mohtasham Garden is located in the center of the city, you can easily access its beautiful garden and mansion at any time of the year. But if you’re a fan of rainy cities, we suggest that you visit Rasht, which is known as the City of Rain, in the middle of March or October. Just don’t forget to grab your umbrella!
