Karim Khan citadel | Imposing citadel of Karim Khan
Karim Khan citadel is located in the center of Shiraz. This citadel was built during the reign of Zandieh dynasty and became known as Karim Khani citadel after Karim Khan Zand chose Shiraz as his capital and this place as his place of residence. During the reign of the Pahlavi dynasty, the citadel was used as a prison, which was damaged a lot. This large building is now under the supervision of the Cultural Heritage Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the restoration work of this building began a few years ago to be used as the Great Museum of Fars province.
The citadel is a combination of residential and military architecture. The interior of the citadel with its painted porches and rooms, fountains and gardens is particularly elegant. The three sides of the north, south and west each have a porch and six living rooms on either side. The east side includes a private bathroom and some service facilities.
The four towers and fortifications, along with the moat that was previously dug around it, also played a defensive role. The thickness of the walls is 3 meters at the base and 12 meters at the top. The height of the towers is 14 meters and they are made of bricks.
One of the four towers of this citadel was tilted like the Leaning Tower of Pisa and was considered one of the tourist attractions of Shiraz. The process of stopping the tilt of this tower is technically and engineeringlly important.
The exterior of the building is made of bricks and the height of the congressional walls is 12 meters. A 14-meter tower has been erected in each corner. At the edges of the wall, very suitable shelters have been built for observation and shooting during the war. The appearance of the building does not have much decoration even in the interior and is limited only to the interior of the rooms.
All the rooms are connected from the inside and can be moved in and out without leaving the interior. The entrance of the rooms is completely opposite each other and only one corridor space is spaced between the two rooms. There are several imperial (alcove) in the citadel which, each of which are embedded for different seasons and attention to royal ceremonies.
The architecture of each of the rooms and imperial is very beautiful and unique. The citadel bath is one of the first private baths with this style in Iran and has been used for the royal family. The first part is the entrance to the Sarbineh bath. There are four platforms for sitting and undressing.
