Jameh Mosque of Isfahan | Oldest Friday Mosque in Iran
The 14th UNESCO World Heritage Site of Iran is Jameh Mosque of Isfahan which is now located in Ghiam square at the end of Isfahan Bazaar. This place was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.
This historical mosque dates back to the second century AH and was built in 156 AH (777 Gregorian calendar). It is also known as Atigh Mosque and Jome Mosque.
The initial design of the mosque was Shabestan (Khorasani or Arabic Mosque), but various changes have been made in the structure of this mosque over 12 centuries, which have led to the development of the mosque. At first, it was made of adobe, however, bricks have been used in the reconstruction because of their strength and the speed of construction. The main changes were made during the Seljuk era. The architects of this era created a new style known as the “Iranian Mosque” by building four porches (Sofe) on the north, south, east and west sides.
Some parts of the mosque including Darvish Sofe, Mozafari Madrassah, Taj al-Molk Dome or Khaki Dome, Chehel Sotoun (forty columns) and Shabestan. Also different epigraphes were made using plaster and brick and designed by Kufic, Thuluth, Nastaʿlīq and Bannai calligraphy.
This mosque has a unique feature named Tarkine Dome (supporting structure of the dome) which makes it possible to create hundreds of domes that were first implemented in Jameh Mosque of Isfahan.
The existence of transoms, quadruple porches, brick posts, vaulted spaces, beautiful Muqarnas, different decorations in the architecture of each era, use of Khorasani style and Razi style has made this mosque an archetype for mosques in Iran and the world.
When you travel to Isfahan, you can enjoy visiting this place and its special features.
