The people of Gilan from different ethnic groups, including Gilak, Talesh and Tat, have come together and formed a very rich and diverse culture and customs. In recent years, the Gilan Rural Heritage Museum has been trying to bring together all the cultural diversity of the people of Gilan in a 263-hectare complex on the outskirts of Rasht, in the heart of the Saravan forest.
When did it all start?
In 1990, after the devastating Rudbar earthquake and due to its irreparable damage to the rural buildings of Gilan, Dr. Mahmoud Taleghani initiated the construction of the Gilan Rural Heritage Museum. But the project entered the implementation phase about 10 years later. During the creation of this complex, more than 30 traditional rural houses from all over Gilan have been collected and installed in the main area of the museum.
The purpose of establishing the Guilan Rural Heritage Museum
The purpose of building the Gilan Rural Heritage Museum is not only to transfer rural buildings, but also to preserve the indigenous culture, construction technique and unwritten knowledge that existed in the villages of Gilan. In this collection, in addition to the rural architecture of different regions of the province, other cultural elements related to the tools of life and work, food, clothing, etc. are also displayed.
Different sections of the Rural Heritage Museum
In this complex, separate areas are provided for restaurants, teahouses, markets, tea gardens, paddy fields, training workshops and handicraft production. Other sections of this site also include indigenous theaters and playgrounds, agricultural and livestock research centers, architecture and anthropology research institute, children’s park, garden for growing medicinal plants and native trees, amusement camp and two guest complexes with a capacity of 150 units of 3 to 5 people Inspired by rural architecture.
This museum is a small but a real example of the traditional way of life and culture of Gilan villages. The architectural part of this museum is a complex whose buildings date back an average of 150 years.
When is the best time to visit?
Due to its humid and somewhat hot weather, the best time to visit Gilan Rural Heritage Museum is in spring or fall. If you chose to visit it in spring, you can enjoy spring blossoms and mild weather.
