Agha Bozourg mosque | world’s first five-story mosque
Agha Bozourg mosque with a history exceeding 180 years is one of the most worth-seeing historical buildings constructed in the Ghajar’s era.
Molla Mahdi Naraghi has established this mosque with his own personal budget. This building is the only five-story mosque in the Islam’s world which has three Shabestans (part of a mosque designed for sleeping or nocturnal prayers) and two yards, a lower yard and an upper yard, which the upper yard is at an even level with the dome and the other crucial characteristic of it, is the combination of mosque and school together, as a unit building.
Agha Bozourg mosque and school’s (Madrassa) architecture
Agha Bozourg mosque in Kashan was constructed in a period when the western architecture was marking its influence on Iranian architecture. Nevertheless, the mosque’s construction was not influenced by the western’s innovation and was totally built based on the Iranian architectural basics and yet, differences and innovations can be seen throughout it. In this complex, tiling, brickwork, precious plaster and tile inscriptions, Muqarnas, Nastaligh and Solos calligraphy and decorative paintings were used.
Its decorations can’t be compared to mosques like Sheikh Lotf-o-Allah mosque in Isfahan or Nasir-ol-Molk mosque in Shiraz; due to the fact that Kashan’s architecture is introverted, too much decorating has been avoided especially in the external parts. Mosque’s outward and its dome are the only brick worked, which gives a feeling of tranquility and humility to visitors.
Portal of Agha Bozourg mosque
Agha Bozourg mosque/school has a beautiful portal whose ceiling is decorated with hanging plastered muqarnas and paintings and there are inscriptions on them which are well-known as tax inscriptions. On the pairs of the mosque’s entrance door there are 6666 nails, because in the past people used to seek shelter in the mosque when foreigners attacked. These nails stopped the enemy from getting into the mosque. Moreover, nail rusts in wood after a while so termites can’t eat the wood, therefore after many years this building’s door is still intact.
The Massive dome
This mosque’s dome is one of the world’s biggest brick domes and has been established on 8 pillars, which according to the Iranian old mosque’s design, building a dome on free pillars is rare to see. Additionally, this makes the air inside the mosque balanced in different seasons in dry and desert climates.
